SPAL = Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor (Society of Art and Work) and they were formed in 1907 mainly as a religious and cultural society. It was not until after the 1st World War in 1919 and after the sports part of the organisation was added that the team began playing in national organised competition with entry to the then second tier tournament. Return to Ferrara nearly 7 years after my last visit and too long for such a nice place. The final game of the season saw Ferrara as they were called for this season, needing a win and top of the table Mezzolora needing a draw or less for Ferrara to win the league.
